Hi Luke,

Congratulations on registering for the LSAT and best of luck in October. If I'm remembering correctly, I registered for the fee waiver (and appealed the denial) and was ultimately granted the fee waver after I had already registered for the LSAT. I didn't press the issue at the time, but I don't believe I got a refund or a credit for the LSAT registration, but I did get the free test prep materials and the credential assembly service was waved. I do recall, though, that if I had taken the LSAT a second time, that the fee waver would have been applied to that second test. Nevertheless, you should call LSAC and see what they say.

I hope that helps and best of luck!

Hi Amanda! Thanks for your comment and congratulations on having survived your first day of 1L year! You're right on track about waiting until you have the bigger picture so you can make those important thematic connections. I waited to start my course summary until I had finished the first main topic on the syllabus. For me, this was typically about two weeks out. Remember at this stage, you're condensing your reading notes and class notes into the one document. The real distillation for exam prep will come in the last half of the semester. Best of luck to you!

Love your advice! Today was my first day of law school and I will definitely be using this system! Just a few questions, how far into the semester did you start the course summary? I feel like I don't have a grasp yet on the bigger picture of what I am reading/studying, does this mean I should wait until I can make a few connections with cases and am able to create more concise headings?

Thank you and best of luck to you in October! And you're not crazy at all. The answer to the question of whether to invest your time and money into a legal education (especially in this economy) is necessarily specific to your own situation. A lot of this depends on your current financial situation, what you hope to gain from your legal education, what market you want to work in, etc. I'm actually drafting a blog post currently that will address some of the things that (in my humble opinion) should be considered; essentially, several questions you can ask yourself as a way of guiding the analysis of whether this is the right decision for you and whether this is the right time to be making this investment. I hope to have it completed within the next week.

Hello Kathie,

Thank you for your very kind words! You've made my day! I enjoy writing and wish that I could spend more time free-writing as I get to do on this blog (as opposed to the strict rigors of law school and lawyerly writing). I am delighted when others appreciate what I have to share and would be very open to writing professionally once I've practiced a few years and feel I can speak on the topic with a little more authority. Because I feel so positively about law school and my experiences thus far, I also feel that I have a duty to counter some of the negativity that is so prevalent in today's law school related blogs. I hope that I can provide just a little breathe of fresh air on the topic.

Wow . . . Just, wow. If I were a book publisher, I would sign you to a 5-year book deal on the spot. What a great writer you are! And so informative. The tips you give here are invaluable to ANY type of student. I am so happy I stumbled onto your blog.

You should seriously consider compiling all these wonderful tidbits into one big book and call it something like:

I Wonder If the Sun's Out Today:
Tips for Surviving Your First Year of Law School

Seriously though, you are a very good writer and a book of this type would help a lot of students cope with all the stressors of law school. Maybe sometime in the future you should consider publishing such a book. For now, though, I'm selfishly happy you're giving these tips free here.

Good luck in your professional career.

Congrats on the position! Good to know. I am currently evaluating the transition from paralegal to attorney so this is wonderful to hear. Taking LSATs in October EVEN in this market...any advice would be much appreciated. I hear all sorts of negativity from my male attorney friends, but support from my female new attorney friends. Am I crazy to even consider this?
